Tapati Baruah Kashyap

Abstract

This article by Tapati Barua Kashyap introduces the legendary poetess of Assam, Late Nalinibala Devi. She is held in great esteem by the Assamese society. She was not only a poetess, but a renowned patriot born to a renowned father, Nabin Chandra Bordoloi who is fondly remembered and respected as a great freedom fighter. His role in encouraging Nalibala Devi is also highly significant. We are very happy to introduce this great poetess to the readers of Ishani through this article by Shrimati Tapati Barua Kashyap, who herself is an acclaimed poetess who composes her poems in English. Two books of her poems have already been published under the title “Peace of Silence” (2001), and “A Discovery” (2008). She is also the author of a book on women’s rights written in Assamese language and published in 2007. It is, in fact, a primer on women’s rights. Our readers may recall that we had carried an article by her in our earlier issue of Ishani of 15 May 2008, where she had described the work of Irish Noble laureate Seamus Heaney.
We are happy to recall that a couple of other States of the North-east region also have acclaimed women writers in prose and poetry. We will attempt to carry articles by these writers as well as articles on them.
