Contribution of Gujarat to the Field of Folklore

Balvant Jani

This paper attempts to historically trace the cycle of scholarship which contributed towards familiarisation and popularisation of the oral tradition and intellectual effort that lead to the acceptance of the oral formĀ  and the bardic literature as respectable areas of debate and research. The paper shows how the native tradition of Gujarati Folk Literature has existed for thousands of years and how , with James Forbes, a serious effort began at rediscovering the riches of oral tradition. It tries to present an unbroken record of this tradition of scholarship, which includes emendatory and interpretative criticism. The paper concludes by acknowledging the contribution made by scholars of contemporary times as well as organisations promoting the cause of oral and folk Literature.
